Biography |
Dave Hallam was born in Cape Town South Africa. As a 5 year old he was already picking out popular tunes by ear on the family upright piano. This led to the provision of formal piano lessons virtually from his first day at primary school. Throughout his schooling Dave studied traditional classical piano but also found himself deviating from Bach and Beethoven to the rather more acceptable (to his peers at least) Beatles and Brubeck. After finishing High School he joined the South African Navy Band as a fulltime trainee Bandsman on Percussion and Piano. 2 years later Dave left the Navy and started out on the road as a Professional Entertainer performing as a solo pianoplayer, a trio with bass and drums and from time to time in bigger bands.
A large portion of his professional career was spent under lengthy contracts entertaining over a 14 year period in well known 5 Star Hotels around South Africa plus a short stint in London UK. In 1995 Dave enrolled himself at the University of Cape Town's College of Music and studied a 3 year Performers Diploma in Jazz Arrangement and Composition graduating in 1997. Dave made a decision in 2002 to explore greener pastures and emigrated to New Zealand basing himself on Auckland's North Shore. He joined the Royal New Zealand Navy Band as a Percussionist/Pianist/Arranger for a short period of time and thereafter began working in the Yamaha instrument retail environment plus teaching piano and keyboard at the same time. Dave started teaching privately from his home studio in Browns Bay in 2008 and enjoyed a very busy teaching practice until July 2015 when he relocated up to the Far North and settled in Kerikeri. A recent move has seen Dave resettled in Wakefield Nelson where he has now re-established his teaching practise tutoring from his home The Music House |
